About Brian:

A California Artist, Brian Frank Carter was born in Santa Rosa, and grew up in San Francisco. He attended the San Francisco Academy of Art prior to enlisting in the US Navy. After four years in the Navy, he attended the Art Center of Los Angeles, after which he returned to San Francisco, and worked as a commercial illustrator for ten years. One of his illustrations prompted the new Oakland Museum in California to hire him for some mural work including the large "Welcome to California" mural in the California Hall. Mr. Carter's murals for the Oakland Museum began the next phase of his career as a much sought after painter of diorama murals for museums. His popularity as a nature muralist is due to his skill in rendering 'biologically accurate' nature. There are approximately thirty-two of his murals in museums, educational centers, and State and National Parks in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, including The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center, Lake Merrit Visitors Center in Oakland, and The Coyote Point Museum in San Mateo. Concurrent with painting murals, he worked seasonally for three years for all the National Parks West of the Mississippi River, repairing and correcting dioramas in their visitor centers. Mr. Carter also painted murals for various restaurants and homes in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1981, he rode a first generation mountain bike around the world, painting and selling his work, and establishing collectors of his work, primarily in Germany. Upon his return to California, he settled down to focus on fine art painting. Mr. Carter is interested in many painting genres and mediums. His many styles and subjects include realistic portraits, landscapes, wildlife, and surrealism. He paints and draws in oil, acrylic, watercolor, gauche, pastel, pen and ink, felt tips, and pencil. He has been described as "An artist who looks out many windows."
